Get
Lost in a Book
Alligator:
Get ready to hear some screams because I’m going to scare her silly! (Alligator
gets closer and closer, making growling noises and opening and shutting
mouth. Girl ignores alligator.) Alligator:
Hey you! (pokes girl) Girl:
Ouch! What do you want? Alligator:
Don’t you know? Girl:
Uh, no how could I? You haven’t told me. Alligator:
Well, you know what I am don’t you? Girl:
Sure, you’re a big, ugly alligator. Alligator:
Well if you know I’m an alligator than you must know what I want. Girl:
Well I don’t so why don’t you just tell me? Alligator:
I want to do what alligators always do: SCARE YOU! Girl:
You should get lost. Alligator:
What did you say? Girl:
You should get lost…in a book! Alligator:
Are you trying to insult me? Girl:
No, I’m giving you some good advice. It’s fun to get lost in a book. Alligator:
How can I do that? Girl:
Go to the Hope Mills Library, check out some good books, and start reading.
Pretty soon you’ll find yourself doing new things and going new places. Alligator:
I hope I don’t get carsick. Girl:
Don’t worry you won’t be going by car. Alligator:
You mean I have to go in a plane? Oh, dear flying makes me nervous. Girl:
No you won’t be going by plane. You go in your imagination. Alligator:
I don’t think I have an imagination. Is that some sort of helicopter or
submarine? Girl:
No imagination means pretending. When you read you pretend to be the
characters in the book. You go where they go and share their adventures with
them. For example, (show 3 different books and quickly explain how exciting the books are).
Alligator:
Wow! Reading sounds very exciting! Girl:
It is. You’re imagination gets so wrapped up in the story that you’re
not aware of anything else. Alligator:
So a ferocious alligator could sneak right up on you and you not even
notice. Girl:
Yes, just like that! Alligator:
You must have been wrapped up in a good book when I tried to scare you. Girl:
I was. I was in the magical land of Narnia with Edmund and we were just
entering the castle of the White Witch. I’m not sure if I can trust her
and it seems as if something is not right. I think we’re going to need to
escape. Alligator:
How thrilling! I think I’m ready to get lost now, in a book that is. Girl:
Here try this one. In this book you can be a young detective named Cam
Jansen. Cam can remember everything she sees! In this story, monkeys are
missing from the zoo and it’s up to Cam to find the thief before they are
lost forever. Alligator:
Oh boy! I can’t wait this is going to be great. I’m off on a great
adventure! (starts to read book and exits stage) Girl:
(turns to read and then turns back) So what do you think? Isn’t it good?
(no answer) Do you like the book? (no answer) Don’t you know it’s polite
to answer people when they talk to you? Girl:
Well he must like the book, because he really did get lost in it.
I hope you’ll get lost in a book here at the library soon too.
Good-bye!
