Cat and Mouse Story

Once there was a cat and a mouse who loved to play in the big white house. Until that is the cat bit off the mouse’s tail and that little mouse began to wail.

“Please cat, give me my tail!”

“No way” said the cat, “you cannot have your tail till you go to the cow and fetch me a pail of milk.”

And off she went.

So the mouse leapt and she ran till she came to the cow and thus began.

“Please cow, give me some milk, to give to the cat, that stole my tail, that won’t give it back until she has a pail of milk.

“No way” moooed the cow. “I will not give you milk till you go to the farmer to get me some hay.”

And off he went.

So the mouse leapt and she ran till she came to the farmer and thus began.

“Please farmer, give me some hay, to give to the cow, who will give me some milk, to give to the cat, that stole my tail, that won’t give it back until she has a pail of milk.

“No way” said the farmer. “I’ll give you no hay, till you go to the butcher to fetch me some meat.”

And off he went.

So the mouse leapt and she ran till she came to the butcher and thus began.

“Please butcher, give me some meat, to give to the farmer, who will give me some hay, to give to the cow, who will give me some milk, to give to the cat, that stole my tail, that won’t give it back until she has a pail of milk.”

“No way” said the butcher. “I’ll give you no meat, till you go to the baker and fetch me some bread.”

And off he went.

So the mouse leapt and she ran till she came to the baker and thus began.

“Please baker, give me some bread, to give to the butcher, who will give me some meat, to give to the farmer, who will give me some hay, to give to the cow, who will give me some milk, to give to the cat, that stole my tail, that won’t give it back until she has a pail of milk.”

“Okay” said the baker, “here is some bread.”

So the mouse took the bread to the butcher, who gave her some meat for the farmer, who gave her some hay for the cow, who gave her some milk for the cat, that stole her tail, that gave it back but the mouse and the cat never played in the big white house again.
